Itinerary
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The 8-9 hour drive takes you through lush landscapes, terraced hills, and vibrant villages. You will enjoy picturesque views of Lake Mburo and the dramatic backdrop of the Kigezi Highlands. Along the way, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Mbarara town, known for its welcoming hospitality.
Upon arrival at Bwindi, check into your lodge nestled in the forest, surrounded by nature. In the evening, relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, preparing for the thrilling adventure that awaits the following day.
Accommodation: Choose from luxury lodges such as Buhoma Lodge or mid-range options like Gorilla Mist Camp for a comfortable stay within proximity to the park.
This is the highlight of your trip! After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the Bwindi Park Headquarters for a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The briefing covers essential trekking guidelines and an introduction to the gorilla family you’ll be tracking. Each gorilla family has its own unique characteristics, and the rangers will provide background on the group you are about to visit.
Accompanied by an experienced guide, you’ll set off into the dense forest, trekking through misty trails, steep slopes, and thick vegetation in search of the gorillas. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla group. The reward is an intimate, magical hour spent observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Watch as they forage, interact, and care for their young – a humbling experience that brings you closer to nature.
After the trek, return to your lodge for some well-deserved rest and a late lunch. In the evening, you may choose to take part in an optional Batwa Cultural Experience, where you can learn about the indigenous Batwa pygmy community and their unique way of life.
Accommodation: Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening by the fireplace or indulge in a massage to unwind after the day’s adventure.
After breakfast, begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive offers another chance to admire Uganda’s beautiful landscapes and vibrant local life. If time allows, you can make a stopover at the Equator for photographs and a unique experience standing in both hemispheres.
Arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the late afternoon, where your incredible gorilla trekking safari comes to an end. You’ll leave with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation of the efforts to conserve these endangered species.
